The saab 9-3 was brought into production in 1998 for the 1999 model year and it replaced the saab 900 new shape.
Very similar looking to the new shape 900 but many different features were changed under the bonnet of the 9-3.
The Saab 9-3 was produced in hatchback, coupe and convertible from 1998-2002. From 2002 onwards the 9-3 was produced in saloon and tourer (estate to you and I).
The general engine and specification differences on the pre 2002 models are as follows-
- Saab 9-3 S 2.0 injection
- Saab 9-3 SE 2.0 injection
- Saab 9-3 SE 2.3 injection
- Saab 9-3 S 2.0 Eco
- Saab 9-3 SE 2.0 Eco
- Saab 9-3 S 2.0 turbo
- Saab 9-3 SE 2.0 turbo
- Saab 9-3 S 2.2 Turbo diesel
- Saab 9-3 SE 2.2 Turbo diesel
- Saab 9-3 Viggen 2.3 turbo
All the above are available in 3 door, 5 door and convertible (apart from the viggen which we will come to later). Also all are available in automatic and manual. The diesel was only available in 5 door and only a handful of 3 doors produced.
The rule of thumb with the S or SE spec is that mainly S spec saabs do not have leather, (although we have seen a few over the years) and the SE specification does but on the earlier years of the 9-3 SE did not always come as standard with this option. Also S spec 9-3's have air conditioning as standard and SE spec has climate control as standard.
Saab also produced a very limited edition model called the Viggen which saab produced less than 3000 of, only 500 were made for the UK market.
The Saab 93 Viggen was available in 3 or 5 door and convertible, 5 doors were very rare and colours other than lightning blue are rarely seen.
A 2.3 turbo engine and only available in 5 speed manual made this the performance saab owners dream. Saab did not hold bacl on the spec either, special bucket 2 tone electric leather seats were fitted with a number of other options not seen on any othersaab.
Viggen stands for lightning bolt in Swedish and what a lightning bolt it is. Very powerful and has a great presence on the road.
The later models (after 2002 until now) followed the 9-5's and were available in sports saloon or tourer (estate). The model range is much larger and many more different engine sizes along with a 1.9 and 2.2 diesel.
Saab changed the way they identified the different models from S or SE. They are now separated into 3 different categories-
The spec varies on saab to saab, but normally the linear is the basic spec (ie no leather etc), the arc is the mid range spec (normally with leather) and the vector is the top of the range.
Saab also produced sports models in each of the above categories with again different ranges of spec and BHP.
The saab 9-3 saloon and estate also comes in the aeroedition.
