Saab 95 : Home › What Saab?Saab 9-5 information

The saab 9-5 was introduced in spring 1997 to replace the saab 9000 for the 1998 model year.

The saab 9-5 is available in the estate (station wagon) or saloon (sedan) options.

The saab 9-5 is available with quite a few engine variations and even more after 2002. From 1997 -2001 you could either have the choice of the following.

  • Saab 9-5 S 2.0 Eco turbo
  • Saab 9-5 SE 2.0 Eco turbo
  • Saab 9-5 S 2.3 Eco turbo
  • Saab 9-5 SE 2.3 Eco turbo
  • Saab 9-5 Aero 2.3 turbo
  • Saab 9-5 SE 3.0 V6
  • Saab 9-5 Griffin 3.0 V6

All the above variations were available in automatic and manual apart from the Griffin and 3.0 V6 which were only available in automatic.

Another model variation that saab produced throughout these years were the airflow edition saabs, which were predominately the full aerobodykit just without the 2.3 full pressure turbo engine, but were available in the 2.3 light pressure turbo engines.

The level of specification varies greatly in the used saab market as quite often different options were added by the customer from new depending on what they wanted their new saab to have on it.

The rule of thumb with the S or SE spec is that mainly S spec saabs do not have leather, (although we have seen a few over the years) and the SE specification does, (unless the new saab buyer requested no leather when the saab was purchased. All saab 9-5's have climate control and most have cruise with the heated seat options usually being an extra.

The only model in the saab 9-5 range that came out of the factory from new with everything on it was the saab 9-5 griffin. This model boasted-

  • Heated seats
  • Ventilated seats
  • electric seats
  • CD and tape deck
  • Sunroof
  • Climate control
  • Cruise control
  • Memory seats and Mirrors
  • Full trip computer
  • Full leather
  • Front fogs
  • Alloys wheels
  • Electric windows and Mirrors
  • Traction control
  • Satellite steering controls

Other extras which are rarely fitted between 1997-2001 were-

  • Park assist
  • heated rear seats
  • Harmon Kardon sound system
  • Cd boot stacker
  • Rolling boot tray (only on the estates)

Many of these options are availble to be fitted on used saabs and we can source most of the extras if you want them fitted when you buy a car from us. Many of the parts can be new or second hand depending on how far your budget stretches.

Saab changed the way they identified the different models from S or SE after 2002 until now. They are now separated into 3 different categories-

  • Linear
  • Arc
  • Vector

The spec varies on saab to saab, but normally the linear is the basic spec (ie no leather etc), the arc is the mid range spec (normally with leather) and the vector is the top of the range.

Saab also produced sports models in each of the above categories with again different ranges of spec and BHP.

The later 9-5's (after 2002) you can have the option of the diesel engine ranging from the 1.9, 2.2 and the 3.0 V6 turbo diesel. All available in the saloon or estate and even an automatic has been produced. Unlike the 9-3's they did not have a diesel engine option pre 2002.
